I never thought I would have a teenage adopted son as God blessed me with a very unique situation. My new son had a past stemming from abuse, violence and neglect and I was charged with finding ways to gain his trust. In getting to know him better, I discovered his heart for Star Wars as he shared stories from the series that gave him great excitement. I knew that earning trust would stem from getting to know him personally and allowing him to express who we was without judgement. I had never had much interest in Star Wars, but became invested in the series after I knew how much it meant to him. After learning more about the "Force" I set out on a quest to Target and I purchased a Star Wars blanket, curtains, figurines and pictures for his room. One night after he got home I looked my son in the eyes and shared the new items for his room as I watched him express great appreciation for the gifts. He shared that he never had anyone take interest in something he cared about and looked forward to sleeping in his new room. I look back at the memory and will never forget how close it brought us together. I wanted him to feel special and gain a sense of belonging with my family. Blessing him with a Star Wars room blessed me with the ability to feel connected to my son in more ways then I could imagine.
