Better than Caroling

"Awkward" and my name are synonymous. Several times it has affected my gift-giving (and receiving.)

To detail one story, let's set the scene of someone who moved to a new state, a new neighborhood, surrounded by new people. Shortly after, Christmas came around, and I had baked a truly excessive amount of cookies. My kitchen counters hosted far too many plates to function, and so my mom had the idea to prepare gift bags for our neighbors. After some convincing (hey, for this "awkward person," going up to new people like a strange little elf wasn't high on my list!), I agreed.

On one of the outings, an older European couple had been outside enjoying the fresh air. We'd introduced ourselves and greeted them before; they were polite and always had a smile for you, but they never said much. I'm not sure if they have any family in the area, so the holidays are probably celebrated amongst themselves. On this occasion, however, their usually quiet demeanor changed and they lit up and were so happy to have received the gift.
