First Communion for my 8 year old niece

My niece, who is also my goddaughter, will have her First Communion next month. Normally I don't worry too much about what I buy for her – if she likes it, then I'm happy! But for this, because it's such a special and specific occasion, I wanted to make sure I was hitting the right balance of sacrament vs. 8 year old girl while also staying true to my own beliefs. I'm not super religious myself, so going purely religious with this gift wasn't going to ring true for me, and she's going to get plenty of rosaries anyway, but whatever I ended up with needed to have some kind of tie to Catholicism for it to work.

I settled on two gifts.

The first gift is a book called Girls Who Rocked the World: Heroines from Joan of Arc to Mother Teresa. She loves to read, and I love planting the idea that girls are powerful and that she can change the world. And the two women called out on the cover? They both just happen to be Catholic saints.

The second gift is a delicate gold sideways cross necklace with her name engraved in it that I ordered from an independent jeweler on Etsy. I liked this idea because she is very fashion conscious, and this necklace is both trendy and symbolic of the Catholic faith. I also wanted the necklace to be a nicer piece of jewelry that she can wear now, and grow up with.

I haven't given them to her yet, but I'm pretty excited about it. I know this one is a slam dunk!
